Flu Season Is In Full Swing

The dreaded flu season is here and we’re right in the middle of it. What is the flu and how do we protect ourselves and loved ones? The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. These viruses spread through the air from person to person. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue, vomiting, and diarrhea. Although any- one can get the flu, young children, pregnant women and adults 65+ years old are at greater risk of developing serious flu-related complications. So how do we protect ourselves? Staying home when you’re sick, covering your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, washing your hands often or using hand sanitizer are behaviors that can help stop the spread of flu. If you already have the flu try these flu natural remedies to help relieve your symptoms:

Vitamin C-may help with immune system function and boost white blood cells. Eating whole fruits and vegetable.

Vitamin D-may help regulate the expression of over 2,000 genes, including those of the immune system. Recent research shows that low vitamin D levels are linked to higher rates of cold, flu and respiratory infections.

Echinacea-this herb can help your body fight off infection, but its best to take at the first sign of illness. It acts as an anti-inflammatory, directly attacks yeast and other kinds of fungus. You can take it in capsules or brewed tea.

Essential oilsOregano oil has a powerful antiviral effect, Peppermint and Frankincense oil applied to the neck and bottoms of feet may naturally help sup- port the immune system, and Clove oil may protect the body against infection and speed recovery time.

Probiotics-Restoring the beneficial bacteria in your gut may help boost your immune system considerably.

Fresh Air-indoor air may be a source of concentrated toxins and germs. The dry air we inhale as we heat our homes during the winter makes airways more reactive and sensitive to viruses. An added bonus is the extra bit of sunlight you receive.

Rest-this old wives’ tale still holds true today. When you’re sick you need to get plenty of rest. One adverse effect of not getting enough sleep is a compromised immune system. Getting enough sleep on a regular basis is key to maintaining good health.

Cinnamon

In ancient times, Cinnamon was extensively used for ritual and mundane purposes. The Egyptians used it for embalming potions, perfumes, incense and oils. It is also mentioned in the Old Testament. In fact, the word ‘Cinnamon’ is derived from the ancient Hebrew word ‘kinnämön, which in turn probably originates from the Malay or Indonesian term ‘Kayumanis’, meaning ‘sweet wood’. In China, the city of Guilin was originally known as ‘Kwei Lin’ meaning ‘cassia forest’, in allusion to the fragrant groves of cassia that that surrounded the ancient city.

A native to Indonesia, but cultivated in Sri Lanka and India, the tree is rust-colored and can grow up to 15 meters (45 feet), but is kept down to six feet for commercial reasons. It has shiny, leathery green leaves and small, white flowers with oval shaped purple berries. The bark is pale brown and papery, with thick quills that roll inside one another, and is gathered every two years. The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of leaves and twigs or the inner bark. Cinnamon leaf oil, which we sell, has a warm, spicy musky smell and the oil’s color varies from yellow for the leaf oil and red-brown for the bark oil.

Cinnamon bark oil has a scent that is very warming and stimulating making it very comforting during the cold and flu season. It is a very strong antibacterial and anti- fungal. When inhaled, it serves as a respiratory and circulatory stimulant and antisep- tic. It may be very useful when inhaled for bronchitis and pleurisy. It may also help raise the body’s temperature if you are chilled. If a cold or flu leaves you shivering, Cinnamon Bark may warm you. It also has been known to have positive effects on those who have Type II diabetes.
